The Upper Room Teachings

All four gospel writers provide some information about Jesus and His disciples celebrating Passover the night before His crucifixion. Only John, however, records in detail the following events:

  • the washing of the disciples’ feet (chapter 13)
  • the teaching Jesus gave after Judas left the upper room (chapters 14-15)
  • the conversation on the way to Gethsemane (chapter 16)
  • Jesus’ prayer in the garden for His followers (chapter 17)

This year during the Lenten season, we’ll prepare our hearts for Easter by examining these chapters, which contain some of the most cherished words our Savior spoke. John prefaces his account of these teaching with these words: “Having loved His own who were in the world, He now showed them the full extent of His love” (John 13:1).

Jesus’ love for His disciples, and for us, motivated Him to prepare His followers not only for what would happen during the next few days, but also for what would happen after He ascended into heaven, as recorded in Acts 1.

May your heart be encouraged by the love Jesus expressed and the wisdom He imparted the night before He died for your sins and mine.

The devotions in this series are located in Dig into Easter: The Call to Serve, The Call to Believe, The Call to Love, The Call to Pray, The Call to Bear Fruit, and The Call to Joy.
