In many ways, Dig Deeper Devotions is a tribute to my father, Don R. Kelso, who loved and taught the Word of God for 48 years. The day after Dad accepted Christ as his Savior at age 35, a fellow Christian, Dr. Walter Sligh, challenged him to read and study the Word of God every day. And that is exactly what Dad did.
Within a year, he was teaching an adult Sunday School class in our church. He led weekly home Bible studies. Soon he was speaking at Christian conference centers and retreats. By the time he died in December 2006, he had taught the Bible in 24 countries across 6 continents. His biblical insights appear regularly in the Word of Life Quiet Time Diary, published by Word of Life International.
My father never attended a day of seminary. He was active in a local church. He read Christian books and commentaries. He heard many messages on both the radio and at conference centers, but his primary Bible teacher was the Holy Spirit.
Jesus told the disciples that the Holy Spirit would “guide [them] into all truth” (John 16:13). My father was living proof of that. He also taught all four of his children to dig deep into the Word of God. Before he died, he gave each of us one of his Bibles, the margins filled with his hand-written notes.
The Holy Spirit is willing to guide every believer into all truth. We just have to be willing to sit long enough and still enough to let Him do it.
My prayer is that Dig Deeper Devotions will inspire you to give the Holy Spirit the opportunity to teach you as He taught my father and as He is teaching me. Dig deep into God’s Word. You won’t regret it.
