[Jesus] said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old” (Matthew 13:52 NIV). Nancy encourages biblical literacy—using the Bible to interpret itself and making connections between the Old and New Testaments.
Nancy retired several years ago from (salaried) teaching. She is currently co-leading women’s Bible studies at her church which encourage women to do their own inductive Bible studies without using a published study book. They have studied Paul’s life and ministry using the Book of Acts and Ephesians. Nancy creates quarterly biblical word search puzzles for Power for Living. The small group she co-leads with her husband often divides and she leads the women. Sometimes the group uses her revised devotions for their Bible studies. Nancy alternates with Denise to write a new devotional Bible study each week on www.digdeeperdevotions.com. They are co-writing an expositional, devotional Bible study on prayer, based on devotions from this website. The working title is Sometimes God Sends Fire; Sometimes He Whispers: Digging Deeper into the Prayers of the Bible.
Nancy has a BA in English and an MA in Reading. She is certified as a Reading Specialist and teacher of English. While teaching college writing as an adjunct professor at Nyack College, she came to a crossroads in her career. Did she want to become a professor, earn another MA, work toward a PhD, and become a scholar? Or did she want to reach a broader audience and keep her writing simpler? She decided go the simpler route.
Nancy participated in student newspapers as a reporter, an editor and a faculty sponsor. She caught a glimpse of publishing from the inside when she worked for four years as a proofreader and administrative assistant/trafficker to the Production Manager of a Books-by-Mail catalog formerly published by Barnes and Noble. Although Nancy had done creative writing in her earlier years, she began writing for publication later in life. When her high school gave a 40-year reunion, the organizer asked Nancy in an email if she had fulfilled her ambition of becoming a writer. Because she had stopped writing after college, she agonized for three months over how to respond before she replied, “No, not yet.” She began to write again and within a year, some of her work was published.
Nancy’s devotions, poetry and puzzles have been published in Decision, Evangel, Power for Living, Purpose, The Quiet Hour, The Secret Place (2009 guest Lenten writer), The Upper Room, The Vision, and War Cry magazines; articles in Cross and Quill, and RevWriter Resource; contributions to Life Savors for Women and Penned from the Heart. She has contributed to Bible studies and devotional booklets published by her church.
Nancy has presented workshops for Literacy Volunteers of America and other workshops on studying the Bible, writing devotions, and finding your spiritual purpose. She’s planning to present workshops in relation to the book she is currently writing on retirement—working title: Individualized Retirement Assignments: Seniors in Scripture (IRAs for short).
