Respect Governing Authorities

Established by God

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established…Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. Romans 13:1-3

Just when you think things can’t get worse, they do. On top of worldwide pandemic with no sign of letting up, we are now threatened with political chaos. But God assures us that he’s in control. He has established all authority. We should be thankful that our country has a somewhat peaceful transition of power compared to other countries.

But why would God establish such flawed leaders? On earth, there are no flawless leaders. Possibly, God has placed someone in power to bring balance or support different ideals than the one who was in power. Those leaders can contribute something to the country other leaders can’t.

God tells us to submit to the authorities, “not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience” (13:5). They are “God’s servants, who give their full time to governing” (13:6). So, pay your taxes, respect and honor your leaders (13:7).

The exception would be when we are asked to do something disobedient to God. For example, when Peter was ordered not to speak anymore in the name of Jesus, he said, “Whether it is right to obey God or man, you judge, we know that we cannot but speak the things that we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:19-20).

Pray for our Leaders

Christians should be the best citizens, not just because they are honest, give no trouble, and pay their taxes, but because they pray for the authorities.  Paul explains, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1Timothy 2:1-2). We need to pray, especially when we think the leaders are doing something wrong. That’s better than complaining.

How can you pray for your government leaders and others in authority over you?
