Nothing in life is more important than having a personal relationship with God.

You can know God. Here’s the best explanation I can give on the Internet:

One night when I was young, my father came home from an evangelistic meeting. I overheard him telling my mother about the many people who had been “saved” that night.  I asked him, “What do you mean—they were saved?”

He then took me aside and explained what the Bible said about salvation:

  1. God loves every human being. He wants all of us to live with Him in heaven one day.

John 3:16 says, For God so loved the world [and specifically you] that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

And 2 Peter 3:9 says, The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

  1. But none of us meet the standard of right conduct that is required to live in heaven.

Romans 3:23 says, For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (That means we can’t reach the standard of righteousness that God demands.)

  1. In fact, we all deserve to be punished.

Romans 6:23 says, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  1. But God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to stand in our place and take our punishment.

Romans 5:8 says, But God demonstrated his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  1. If we admit that we can’t enter Heaven on our merit and if we accept that Jesus became our replacement, God will extend to us the privilege of entering heaven when we die.

Romans 10:9 says, That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

I accepted God’s gift of salvation that day long ago. I prayed a prayer similar to this: Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I know I have done bad things. I believe that You sent Jesus to die on the cross to pay for my sins. That is the only way I can go to heaven. By faith I accept Your gift of salvation. Thank You, Jesus, for dying for my sins.

If you believe what these verses in the Bible say, and you can honestly pray a prayer similar to the one I prayed, God will give you the gift of salvation and your personal relationship with Jesus will begin.

To keep that relationship strong, you should read the Bible and pray every day. Find a church near you that teaches the Bible is the Word of God. Join a Bible study group. And you will grow closer and closer to Jesus, the one who died for you.
