“Do Not Be Afraid”

The words “Do not be afraid” appear several hundred times in the Bible. God says it to Abraham in Genesis, and Jesus says it to the apostle John in Revelation. Sometimes God speaks these words to individuals in private conversations; sometimes God delivers this message through prophets or kings in mass gatherings.

On some occasions the words must have been spoken gently, as when Gabriel comforted young Mary of Nazareth (Luke 1:30). At other times, the tone seems sharper, more like a command, as when Moses tells the Israelites: “Do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land” (Numbers 14:9).

But on every occasion, God’s people were assured that he knew why they were full of fear, how to dispel that fear, and what steps would enable them to move forward in their faith journey.
