Proverbs 11

Discretion

Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion. Proverbs 11:22

When you look in the mirror, do you cringe? Another pimple, another wrinkle … my nose … my hair …! What we see is influenced by our society, which has varying ideas as to what makes a woman beautiful, a man handsome. Certain physical attributes have been deemed more valuable than others, but often only for a time. Opinions vary from country to country.

You hear may hear “Beauty is as beauty does,” and “Beauty is only skin deep.” However, certain nonphysical qualities have endured—

even since Solomon’s time. One quality Solomon valued in a woman was discretion, which can be defined as “the quality of behaving in a quiet and controlled way without drawing attention to yourself or giving away personal or private information.”*

A discrete woman has a quiet, gentle spirit. She controls her tongue. She doesn’t draw attention to herself. She’s not a gossip—won’t listen to or pass on destructive or untrue information about others. She has good ethical judgment. She has inner grace, even if not outward beauty.

Solomon’s grotesque and humorous comparison paints a vivid comparison (Proverbs 11:22). Jewels were sometimes suspended from a person’s nose then as they are now (Genesis 24:47 Isaiah 3:21 ). But no one wanted to imagine a pig this way, his snout rummaging in the garbage! Disgusting. And so is an indiscreet woman.

Lord, help us to see our inner beauty as you do. Help us to be discrete and to show self control. Help us display characteristics that bring you glory. Amen.
